Wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin will lead the West Indies in Sunday’s Digicel 20/20 International against England at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad.
Regular Captain Chris Gayle injured his hamstring muscle when he got to his century in the last Test in Trinidad and it is reported that he could be out of action for 10 to 15 days.
Grenadian Andre Fletcher, St Lucian Darren Sammy and Trinidadians Keiron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo will join the side for the shortest version of the game.
Gayle, Ryan Hinds, Brandon Nash and Daren Powell are the players who have been replaced for the 20/20 fixture. Shivnarine Chanderpaul has recovered from a groin strain is also included in the squad for the one-off match before the more important 50 overs series starts with back-to-back matches in Guyana on March 20 and 22.
Bravo returns to International cricket after undergoing surgery on his ankle in New York in August last year after carrying the injury for two years. His last 20/20 International was against Australia last June, but scored a century in a recent 20/20 club match in Trinidad.
Ramdin and Bravo have played the most 20/20 matches among West Indies players (nine each) while Gayle, Chanderpaul and Edwards are next in line with eight each.
This is the sixth 20/20 series the West Indies will be involved in since losing to New Zealand 1-nill in the one-match series in New Zealand in March 2006. They also participated in the 20/20 World Cup in South Africa. The West Indies have won four of their 10 previous 20/20 Internationals including the one against New Zealand in Auckland last December which they prevailed in the one-over contest after the game ended in a tie.
Gayle has scored the only 20/20 International with his 117 against South Africa and his pugnacious hitting at the top of the order will be missed by the home team on Sunday when the West Indies hope to win their second 20/20 match against England in the third meeting between the two teams.
West Indies 20/20 squad: Denesh Ramdin (Captain), Lionel Baker, Sulieman Benn, Dwayne Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Fidel Edwards, Andre Fletcher, Keiron Pollard, Darren Sammy, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Lendl Simmons, Devon Smith, Jerome Taylor
