The inclement weather that had prevented volleyball players from engaging in practice sessions has abated enough for training sessions and other activities to get underway.
As such, executives and players of the Guyana Volleyball Federation convened at the National Park Sunday afternoon last to commence the President’s Cup, the inaugural tournament for the season.
Four teams, Sargans, Dwarfs, Giants and Sharks competed for honours at the end of which Sargans outplayed Dwarfs in the finals to capture the winning trophy.
Sargans won the first two sets 25-21, 25-15 before Dwarfs rebounded to take the third 25-24. Sargans then took the decisive fourth set 25-18 before dropping the final set 15-11. Outstanding players were Denise Perrier, Ronette Adams, Odessa Martins and Candace Odle.
Vice President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation, Trevor Smith intimated that his organization is currently preparing for the Tri Nation Inter-Guiana Games between Suriname, French Guiana and Guyana and would be using these tournaments to sharpen their skills.
He said that the idea of playing in the National Park is to make the game more visible to the public in order to create a high level of awareness. He said that while the females were in action this week, the males would display their skills at the same venue on Sunday.
He is encouraging members of the public to attend the sessions. The players that will compete in the planned competitions over the next few weeks are a part of the squad preparing for the Inter-Guiana Games.
