Rudolph Mitchell proved that he is undoubtedly the best race walker locally when he out-walked a field of aspirants, including Jonathon Fagundes and O’Neil Joseph to register a time of five minutes flat.
The event was the Cheddi Jagan Memorial Race Walk organized by the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC) Sunday morning.
The race started at the Bank of Guyana building along Main Street, and ended in front of the Red House. Jonathon Fagundes clocked 5:51seconds to finish in second place while Joseph clocked 6:20secs.
Maurice Fagundes continued his rich vein of form in the veteran’s category. He clocked 7:58sec to finish ahead of Harold Debidyal (8:02secs). Lloyd Conway came in third while Samuel Fraser (snr) brought up the rear.
Dennis Burns was the first to cross the finishing line in the disabled category with Franklyn Archer in the second place. Gerard Alfred came in third. Patina Augustin was the first woman to finish the race.
President of the Guyana Amateur Body Building Federation, Frank Tucker sent the walkers on their way but not before delivering a pep talk.
He told them that he was impressed with the strides that the CSTC was making in promoting the sport.
Tucker, who represented one of the sponsors, the Bank of Guyana, reminded the race walkers that it was important that they maintain a high level of discipline in conducting their activities. “Respect and responsibility is the watchword,” Tucker implored. He assisted in presenting the prizes at the end.
