Retired Colonel Godwin McPherson, President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation since late 1990, seem to finally find favor with the Ministry of Sports.
If the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation bid to host the Caribbean Basketball Championship is successful, the occasion will be the second time the Land of Many Waters will play host under the Colonel’s supervision.
Guyana after placing third at the inaugural event 1981 at home were never serious contenders at championships in 1982 in Jamaica, 1985 Barbados, 1986 Trinidad, 1988 Guyana, 1991 Jamaica, but the McPherson Administration acquired the services of overseas coach Erik Rashaad for the 1994 Championship which Guyana hosted, the rest is history.
The National Team led by Leon Christian reached the finals for the first time losing to Barbados, the Land of Many Waters automatically qualifying for the Centro Basketball Championship in Guatemala but did not attend because of a lack of sponsorship.
After a disappointing performance the next year in the Bahamas, the following year 1996 McPherson became the first president of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation to win a Caricom Basketball Championship, when the Karen Abrams led side trounced the rest of the Caribbean in Trinidad the men’s team under Lugard Mohan also reached the semi-finals losing by two points to the eventual Champions Jamaica.
The McPherson Administration should also be given credit for the resurrecting of Basketball at the International under-19 level for Guyana.
The first step was a goodwill tour of Suriname 1993 then tours to the Cayman Islands and Atlanta 1995, the Atlanta tour was the first time any Guyana representative basketball team played on U.S.A shores.
Guyana babies then proudly represented the Land of Many Waters at the Junior Caricom Championships in Jamaica 1997, the year 1999 Guyana with the Colonel still at the Helm hosted the Junior
Caricom Championship.
For the first time the following year 2000, the Lugard Mohan led side reached the semi-finals of the Caricom Championship hosted by Barbados, losing to the US Virgin Islands, the National Team then rebound with a flambouyant performance destroying defending Champions Belize to capture third place under the stewardship of McPherson along with local stars Sean Semple, Edgar Thomas, Lancelot Loncke, Remington Ram, Orin Mohan, Lorenzo Withrite, who all gained US Basketball scholarships.
In his second year at the Helm, the Colonel gave Guyana its first taste of professional basketball with the visit of the Germany’s based basketball team. This time around the Colonel will need more than his platoon or battalion to combat a mission that will make all 83,000 square miles proud. Let’s see if he will get the rightful and necessary resources.
