Committed to its mission to serve the less fortunate, the Lions Club of Georgetown/Stabroek yesterday engaged in a number of humanitarian activities which are expected to make life much easier for several persons in the society.
Members of the Club converged just after 10:00 hours on Smyth Street, Georgetown, outside the Dolphin Secondary School where they repainted a faded pedestrian crossing. The project, according to the members was undertaken after it was recognised that the crossing was not providing the service it was intended to since it was no longer visible.
The students of West Ruimveldt Secondary will also benefit from a pedestrian crossing which was refreshed by the Club’s members.
In addition to the painting tasks, the members also ventured to D’Urban Street and Queenstown in the city as well as Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, where they presented wheelchairs to disabled persons residing in those communities.
According to President of the Club, Pamela Bridgewater, the Lions Club has over the years been providing humanitarian service to the society, a practice which encapsulates the purpose of its existence.
She explained that persons in need of assistance have the privilege of writing to the Club detailing why they should be assisted in one way or another.
And based on the details of individual cases, Bridgewater disclosed that cases are prioritised, with the aim of rendering assistance to the most urgent ones first.
The three wheelchairs given out yesterday, she disclosed, were made available by Joey George, a United States-based member of the club, who along with his friends, is usually able to procure items to assist persons. The wheelchairs were shipped through Laparkan Shipping Company which has been supporting the Club’s efforts.
