Executive pays courtesy call on Minister of Sport
The executive of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) has named a three man team to represent the Federation at the 3rd Annual Caribbean Islands Bench Press and Powerlifting Championships scheduled for St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, May 14 – 16 and the 7th Annual North American Regional, 12th Annual NAPF/FESUPO Pan American Regional Powerlifting Championships set for Miami, USA August 4 – 8.

Mervyn ‘Spongy’ Moses competing in the 75kg class, Randolph Morgan 82.5kg and ‘Big’ John Edwards 125kg are the lifters named.
The team will be managed by the Federation President Peter Green who will also be attending the NAPF Congress to finalise arrangements with regard to Development Assistance and the 4th Annual Bench Press and Caribbean Championships which Guyana has been selected to host April 2010.
Both Edwards and Moses represented Guyana with flying colors at the last Caribbean championships held in Aruba, June, 2008. Their participation marked a welcome return for Guyana after a 12 year hiatus.
Morgan enjoyed a good 2008 and was named best lifter at the 2008 senior GAPLF championships.
Meanwhile, the President and Executive recently visited Minister of culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony to update the Minister of the Federations plans for the next two years.
President Peter Green reported that the meeting was a very cordial one and they took the opportunity to present the Federations Policy Document containing their work programme and budget along with their five year plan.
Green stated that Dr. Anthony is now well informed on the aims and goals of the body. Also attending the meeting was Director of Sport Neil Kumar and he along with the Minister pledged their support for the sport of Powerlifting. Dr. Anthony made a commitment to assist the GAPLF with the purchasing of a new powerlifting bar and weights totaling over 850 pounds.
