The town of Linden will come alive today when the Old Fort Hockey Club stages a one-day Fiesta, at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground, starting from 10:00 hrs.
According to President of the club Ivor Thompson, all the top clubs in the country will be participating in the competition which has been organised to generate interest in the sport in the community.
Among the clubs expected to compete in the day’s activities are Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC), Hikers and Western Dragons, while juniors from the community will play with the Ladies.
Each club have been asked to field two teams and a day of keen action is anticipated to signal the commencement of the Guyana Hockey Board 2009 season.
Meanwhile Old Fort has named its respective squads which will include a number of current and former national players.
Among them are Wayne St. Jules, Ivor Thompson and Gavin Hope, all of who are expected to be in the ‘B’ unit, while nationals Jason De Santos and Aderemi and Askofu Simon have been named in team ‘A’.
Other players who will showcase their skills in the tournament are Mickel Smith, Dwight Sullivan, Chris Low-Koan, John Abrahams, Jason Shepherd and Dwayne Alleyne.
Bully-off time is 10:00 hrs.
Some of those expected to appear for GCC are Phillip Fernandes, Devin Hooper, Alan Fernandes, Orland Semple, Patrick Edghill, Dwayne Scott and Shaka Gill for the men, while the Ladies will be spearheaded by the young brigade that include Alysa Xavier, Ashley DeGroot and Marzena Fiedtkou.
Hikers will comprise Devin Munroe, Robert France, Jerazeno Bell, Robert Fernandes for the men and Maria Munroe, Cora Towler and Amanda Garnette for the women.
Meanwhile, the respective winners will receive trophies and other prizes.
