Demerara retained the Castrol Under-15 Inter-County title when they beat Berbice by 7 wickets in the final match yesterday, at the Guyana National Stadium.
They had to rely on another outstanding batting display by opener Brian Sattaur, who hit a matured undefeated 51 which included 7 gorgeous boundaries to achieve a revised target of 93 in 36.2 overs of the 39 allotted overs in reply to 99 all out Berbice made off 36.5 overs.
A one hour rain delay in the morning, forced the umpires to revert to the Duckworth & Lewis system.
Also playing a crucial role in the team’s victory was pacer Kareem Naughton, who was instrumental in the destruction of the Berbice batting line-up, returning figures of 5-27 from 8 overs which earned him the Player-of-the-final award.
At the crease with him when victory came was Chanderpaul Hemraj, who made 11.
Earlier, fellow opener Christopher Surat batted painstakingly for 10, before he was bowled by spinner Shawn Perreira after posting a partnership of 37 with Sattaur.
Chandrika Persaud reached 3 when he inexplicably danced down the pitch to the wily left-arm spin of Gudakesh Moti Kanhai and offered an easy stumping chance to wicketkeeper Mark Basdeo, who replaced opener Trevor Thomas in the side. The total was then 51-2.
The only other wicket to fall for Demerara was Sunil Rupee, bowled by Moti Kanhai trying to run a straight delivery down to third man, but completely missed the ball instead. His contribution was 2 and the total 78-3.
Moti Kanhai took 2-21 off 8 overs, while Perreira had 1-14 also from 8 overs.
Berbice, who started the day in the ascendancy on 8 points to Demerara’s 5, won the toss and as they did the day before, elected to take first strike and were 36-4 in 7.4 overs when heavy showers interrupted play.
The visitors got off to a disastrous start when Jamal Henry was bowled by Naughton for 4 with the score on 6.
Lloydel Lewis then joined Rajindra Dasrath, but with the addition of 18 runs, Berbice lost two wickets. The first to go was Lewis, who was snapped up at slip by Demerara’s Captain Shaquille Williams off Naughton’s bowling for 5 and the previous day’s Man-of-the-Match Kevin Ramdeen, who nicked a delivery to wicketkeeper Denesh Mangal off Naughton before he had scored.
Further trouble was to come shortly before the rains came when opener Rajindra Dasrath picked out the fielder at mid-on off Treyon Bobb’s bowling for 14 and the score 36-4.
After the resumption, Veerapen Permaul and Linden Austin added another 10 runs when disaster struck. The first to go was Permaul caught at first slip by Williams off Naughton for 15 and Perreira then fell, leg before without scoring to the same bowler.
Shilendra Shameer was the next to make his exit, picked off at slip by Williams for 3 off Hemraj and Bisham Deolall followed next, bowled by Williams also for 3 as Berbice slid to 66-8.
Austin’s long vigil finally came to an end when he provided Williams with a simple return catch with his personal tally 13 and the total 72-9.
The pint-sized Moti Kanhai and Basdeo batted sensibly, adding a further 27 runs for the last wicket, before the former, who was playing the sheet anchor role tried to attack Persaud, but only succeeded on spilling a return catch to the bowler. He made 9, while Basdeo was left high and dry on 12.
Apart from Naughton’s impressive showing, Williams took 2-15 off 8 overs, while there was one wicket apiece for Hemraj, Bobb and Persaud. The team was managed by Ray Barton and coached by Daniel Richmond.
Later at the presentation ceremony, Sattaur and Moti Kanhai won bats for being adjudged the Best Batsman and Bowler respectively, while Mangal was voted the Best Wicketkeeper.
Castrol Brand Manager Leonard Khan distributed the prizes and the winning trophy.
Meanwhile, Guyana will host this year’s West Indies U-15 Competition in April.
