Following a lengthy meeting yesterday between members of Guyana Power and Light Company and the National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE), the power company has decided to return to the agreement.
According to NAACIE General Secretary, Kenneth Joseph, for several years now the Union and GPL had agreed that junior staff would be paid double for working on a sixth day, and senior staffers would be paid 15 per cent of their salary for extra work.
At the meeting GPL decided on the new course of action and, as of this month-end, the workers would be paid their monies, Joseph said.
Last month, without any consultation with NAACIE, GPL stopped making the payments to the workers, which were in accordance with a long-standing agreement.
The company will again start paying the workers their monies, but they have asked the Union to rethink the agreement.
According to Joseph, the power company has asked that the Union do some investigation, since it is claiming that persons are abusing the agreement.
Joseph said they have asked the company to produce evidence of persons abusing the overtime system.
GPL is expected to produce its findings on or before March 26.
