More than 70 residents of the Patensen (Sophia) area were last Thursday beneficiaries of hampers and clothing, compliments of Food For the Poor (FFP) Guyana Inc.
Doris Anita Shelto of the Patensen Mothers’ Action Group on Social Issues hands over one of the hampers to a young resident.
The hampers were presented by head of the Mothers’ Action Group on social issues of Patensen Turkeyen (B Field), Doris Anita Shelto.
The group, which was launched in 2007, has been focusing on the development of single-parent mothers in the community and since its inception, has been conducting programmes to the benefit of a number of women in the community.
According to Ms Shelto, Thursday’s exercise was facilitated by Chairman of FFP Leon Davis who immediately responded to an appeal for assistance by the group.
Ms Shelto also expressed thanks to Opposition Leader Robert Corbin who has provided a number of text books as well as Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud who has provided the group with agriculture seeds for distribution.
“For the past three months I have been distributing seeds and we still have more,” Shelto said.
She expressed appreciation for the services of Justice Desmond Burch-Smith who has been visiting the community every other week giving lectures on self-esteem and the effects of crime in an impoverished community.
