The PPP has used lies to entrench a dictatorship

Dear Editor,
Some letter-writers use the letters section to spread their daily propaganda to a nation fed up with PPP lies.
These lies and myths are couched in the identification as “facts” to our society. They have grown so accustomed to us accepting and acting on their many lies that they now take it for granted that we still accept anything they spew at us, no matter how twisted.

The fact is that many of us have grown tired of PPP lies, propaganda and evil. It has passed the stage of eye-pass… Successive leaders of the PPP have lied to this nation.
They lied about struggling against Burnham and the PNC for a living wage when they, who claim to be working-class, ignore the pleas and collective bargaining efforts of various unions for workers’ right to a living wage, and instead use us workers as political footballs.

They lied and told us the NIS was a part of Burnham‘s “evil plan.” Now today they embrace this “evil plan” and hundreds of thousands of Guyanese depend on the NIS for sustenance, even as sugar workers remain the largest benefiting bloc of workers to enjoy NIS.
They lied and told us that the banning of dhal peas and flour was a direct assault on the Indian.
They did not tell us that this was a necessary sacrifice at the time to save foreign exchange and that people on the sub-continent of India did not use the split pea for dhal, and that we could have been supportive of the economic challenges by adjusting.

They also did not tell us that Afro-Guyanese and other ethnic groups also relied on flour in equal measure to make bread, bakes, cakes, roti and puri also.
They made it look and sound like a racial attack, using culture and food to keep Indians divided from the other races.
They did not tell us that split pea was also a major part of the Afro-Guyanese cook-up rice and other dishes, so that we could have appreciated that the sacrifice was truly indeed of all races.
For years they have condemned the Burnham 1980 constitution as dictatorial.

They did not tell us that Burnham never used the Constitution the way they have, and that they now find pleasure in using it to entrench a PPP dictatorship, elected under a farcical democracy.
They do not tell us that Burnham and the PNC respected the Constitution, maintained the separation of powers between Executive, Legislative and Judicial – that he respected the decisions of the court unlike the history they have of undermining and violating the Constitution, and of operating contrary to the directions of the Judiciary.

Burnham told this nation that we were the Cooperative Republic of Guyana pursuing a socialist ideology. Equal opportunity was available to all, sacrifice was expected from all.
They claim that Indians were marginalised in the police force, the GDF, the various military wings and the government services.
Seventeen years later these offices remain the same and they do not tell us that we Indians are not inclined to, nor do we gravitate towards these services that are seen as poverty circles with low income and starvation wages.

They do not acknowledge that we make up more of the Private Sector, and that politics has noting to do with our preferences.
They condemned the buy-local campaign of the 70’s but urge us in the 90’s to buy local.
They have ignored the many cottage industries and local entrepreneurs who developed from this era to make the self-employed a viable engine of economic development.
They told us of a lack of freedom under an alleged dictator. They fail to acknowledge the freedoms denied under a so-called democracy.

The control of the media, restriction imposed on licensing, harassment of media owners and advertisers.
They ignore the fear in our society and claim the quiet as compliance. They talked about PNC officials and corruption even as we see a number of former PNC members living ordinary lives among the people.
They have separated themselves in “Prado Villes” reflecting consumptive powers beyond their income and former status.
Guyana needs a truth commission, a revisiting of the pre-colonial struggles and post-colonial history of this country. We have had enough of PPP lies and distortions.
