The body of an office assistant attached to the Parliament Buildings was pulled from the Atlantic Ocean hours after he perished while taking a swim in the vicinity of the Number 63 Beach, Corentyne.
Trevor Balgobin, 32, of North Road, Bourda was reportedly on an outing with his colleagues in Berbice yesterday when he decided to take a dip in the ocean.
He encountered difficulties and was reportedly swept away by the waves before anyone could have rescued him.
Despite frantic efforts his body was only recovered hours later, leaving his colleagues in a state of shock.
According to reports, Balgobin and some of his colleagues planned a trip to view the Berbice River Bridge.
They then headed to the famous Number 63 Beach, where Balgobin got out and decided to take a swim.
His great-aunt with whom he had been living for the past 22 years, 94-year-old Maude Greaves, told this newspaper that Balgobin had informed her yesterday morning that he was going to Berbice.
When this newspaper visited her modest home around 17:00 hours yesterday, she was unaware that he had died.
According to Greaves, she took Balgobin into her home when he was 10 years old and sent him to school.
She even taught him at home herself whenever she could.
The 94-year-old woman said that the young man was a great help to her, since he would sometimes wash and cook for her.
“He helps me with everything,” Greaves told this newspaper.
Neighbours described the young man as very mannerly, and they too could not bring themselves to break the tragic news to the elderly woman.
