A Region Six resident, Dianne McDonald, 21, managed to overcome the stark change in environment and become the best graduating student of the Dentex Certificate Course at the Cheddi Jagan Dental School.
The graduation ceremony took place on Saturday.
McDonald had been studying at the dentistry school for over two years before she graduated with the honours her diligence and hard work brought her.
She said that she owed her achievements to “lots of studying and paying keen attention to all of the various practical exercises we did”.
She added that her patience and her diligent studying brought her the success she craved.
“When I was a child,” she said, “I knew I wanted to pursue a career in either the medical or the legal disciplines.”
She said that she had been curious about dentistry and, following her curiosity, she began to learn about dental health.
“I found it interesting, so I continued to look into it and I liked it and, really, things just went from there,” she said.
Since she comes from Brighton Village, Corentyne, McDonald said that she wants to return to her home and there she will practise dentistry. “I will be practising dentistry at the Mibicuri Public Hospital,” she said.
This, she said, would make her happy, because she would be closer to home. After being away from home for so long, being in close proximity to her family would be welcome. “Being away from my family for these times depressed me,” she said.
However, she said that after a few months in Georgetown she got used to living in town, and most of her qualms about the city soon vanished. “I made sure I did not let Georgetown get to me – with all of the places to go and things to do,” she said.
She said that the manner in which she was brought up helped her to stay away from the many distractions offered by the city.
With a smile on her face, she said that in fact she had only been to a night club once, on the night of her graduation.
After working for some years, McDonald said that she aspires to go back to dental school to pursue her Dentex Diploma Course, and then she hopes to get her degree in dentistry.
