As part of a new initiative to revive hockey in schools, the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) will be hosting a Coaches’ Development Workshop today from 13:00-17:00 hrs, at the Y.M.C.A. Thomas Lands.
According to a release from the GHB, the Workshop will be specifically geared towards developing beginner coaches who are likely to conduct school-level coaching sessions in the upcoming months.
The GHB has prepared a syllabus of material to guide coaches involved in the school programme which will be presented to all in attendance. Apart from the content of what will be taught, the focus of the workshop will also be on coaching skills, especially to those who are required to work with junior players new to the game.
The workshop is being run by national coach and GHB President Philip Fernandes, who has assisted in conducting UK Level 1 coaching courses in both Trinidad & Tobago and Barbados in the past.
The training is expected to attract 12 – 15 coaches from the hockey fraternity and will comprise both theory presentation and practical application segments.
According to Fernandes, in order to get coaches ready for the immediate implementation of hockey in the schools there will be a strong focus on having the participants conduct mini-coaching exercises after which they will be assessed and advised.
The GHB’s school initiative has already begun at North Ruimveldt Multilateral School, St. Joseph’s High School and Marian Academy, while several other schools have been contacted and are expected to join the programme soon.
