Swimming action in earnest commences this weekend when the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) host their Annual Mashramani Meet tomorrow and Sunday at the Castellani Swimming pool, Homestretch Avenue.
This weekend’s competition which is expected to bring out the best athletes in the land will also serve as Time Trials for the 2009 Inter Guiana Games.
The Mash Meet made a welcome return last year after a one year drought which was due to venue challenges. Last year’s event was held at the Colgrain Pool, Camp Street.
Competition will kick off at 10:30hrs tomorrow with the 100 and 200m individual medley which would be followed by the 50m butterfly. The afternoon session will see the 400m freestyle, 50m breaststroke and 100m freestyle being contested while the events slated for Sunday are the 200m free, 100m backstroke, 100m fly, 50m back, 100m breast and 50m free.
All citizens, born or naturalised are eligible to compete while Non-Nationals may compete as guests after securing the approval of GASA.
The contesting age groups will be 8 & under, 9 – 10, 11 – 12, 13 – 14, 15 – 17 and 18 & over while the age of the competitors on 31st December, 2008 will determine the age-group in which they will be eligible to compete. Competitors can enter any number of events in their respective categories while all events will be timed finals.
The Technical meeting is set for this evening at the Colgrain Pool, Camp Street beginning at 18:00hrs.
Meanwhile, Linden Wickham, who ruled the roost in the 13-14 boys division has migrated and based on reports is still active at his new school. Trinidad and Tobago based Jessica Stephenson who was Guyana’s shining light at the Carifta Games has been recovering well from a shoulder injury.
Stephenson underwent a successful surgery to her left shoulder and is currently undergoing intensive rehabilitation, three times weekly. Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, Stephenson’s mother Davina reported that Jessica should be back in the pool within the next two months.
“She has started back doing kicking and has not stopped with her cardio and dry land workouts throughout her rehab. She has also set goal times with Coach Franz Huggins for year end to ensure that the latter part of the year will see her meeting goal times for 2010 and for representing Guyana again in Carifta and other regional Meets.”
