A woman whose house suffered extensive damages after a huge palm tree, planted on M&CC reserves, fell on her roof is still to receive compensation for the mishap.
She is appealing to the officials of the M&CC to expedite their investigations as she is forced to sleep in an unsecured house.
The woman is also seeking compensation for several damaged pieces of cutlery, the cupboard in which they were stored as well as the death of her beloved pet parrot.
The incident occurred more than three weeks ago, around 02:30hrs while Rita DaSilva and her spouse were fast asleep. The tree damaged a large portion of DaSilva’s roof as well as a four-burner gas stove and other kitchen utensils. The impact of the crash also damaged the cupboard where the woman stored her wares.
Moments after the mishap occurred, Deputy Mayor, Robert Williams accompanied by officials from the engineer department of the M&CC had visited DaSilva’s home to assess the damage and verify whether the M&CC was culpable. On that day also, Public Relations Officer, Royston King had sought a report from City Engineer (ag), Lloyd Alleyne, on the matter.
Alleyne had reported that initial investigations had uncovered that the tree had fallen after someone had lighted a fire at its base.
He had then promised to have the matter expeditiously ventilated.
However, DaSilva said that she is still awaiting word from City Hall officials on measures to relieve her of her suffering.
She said that since the tree fell and the investigating crew from the M&CC departed, there has been no further word pertaining to the investigations. She has since visited the City Hall on several occasions. “All I’ve been getting is lots of promises,” the woman lamented.
She said that while City officials are procrastinating, she has to sleep in an unsecured house.
To make matters worse, the woman said that soon after the incident, her husband had to leave the country on business, leaving her and her two children in the unsecured house. She is fearful that bandits may capitalize on the opportunity to invade her home.
Kaieteur News revisited the scene yesterday and discovered that while the tree was no longer lying on the woman’s roof, no further action has been taken. The gaping hole in the roof is yet to be fixed.
The damaged gas stove is also still to be repaired even as the woman prepared her meals on a one-burner kerosene stove. The cupboard where the woman had stored her wares had received the brunt of the impact when the tree fell on the roof. DaSilva also said that most of her kitchen utensils were damaged.
Yesterday morning, while this newspaper was talking to DaSilva, Public Relations Officer of the M&CC, Royston King, telephoned and relayed his regrets that the matter was still pending. He said that councilors will convene for statutory meeting next Monday and the issue will be a part of the agenda. “Whatever, comes out of the meeting will determine how the Council will address the issue,” King promised.
In the meantime, DaSilva sleeps in a house with a severely damaged roof, exposed to the elements as well as those that harbour unsavory criminal propensities. She is appealing to officials of the M&CC to expedite their investigations so that she may resume a normal life.
