Missing seaman reportedly jumps ship in Suriname

The family of 45-year-old Rajesh Persaud, popularly known as ‘Bruck Up’, is desperately trying to locate him. It has been more than one month since he left for sea and they have not been able to make contact with him. The family was told by the captain of the boat from which Rajesh jumped that the ship was in docks in Suriname two weeks ago when the man disappeared.
However, the man’s brother, Rajin Persaud, told Kaieteur News yesterday that he finds it strange because the missing man has no relatives in Suriname. He added that even if his brother is there, he would have made contact with the family.
The man explained that Rajesh left his Blairmont home on February 2, last, for Georgetown to go to sea. Since then he has not been seen or heard from.
On February 24, last, Rajin said that he received a telephone call from the captain’s wife informing him that his brother was back from sea.
He added that when he visited the captain’s home to go see his brother, he was not there. The captain’s wife then told him that he had gone to purchase cigarettes. Rajin said that he left without seeing his brother and enquired from the captain’s wife the whereabouts of his brother.
In a surprising twist of events, the man said that the woman then said that she was making a joke with him when she said that his brother had come back from sea. It was then that she informed him that Rajesh had “jumped off’ the ship in Suriname.
The man said that for the woman to be making a joke about the situation is very strange, since his brother’s life is involved. It was then that he believed something ‘fishy’ is going on.
Rajin added that he made a report at the Beterverwagting Police Station, where the captain and crew members were taken into custody for questioning.
The man noted that so far, the police have been very cooperative. They are trying their best to gather information on the whereabouts of Rajesh Persaud, his brother added.
The missing man’s brother is asking anyone with information which may lead them to find Rajesh to contact the family on telephone number 621-2409.
