…NAACIE will not negotiate – Joseph
General Secretary of the National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE), Kenneth Joseph has stated that there will be no negotiation in relation to the GPL breach of agreement.
This follows a meeting between NAACIE and a board member of the Guyana Power and Light Company yesterday. The parties met yesterday to hold discussions relating to the power company’s breach of a long standing agreement.
According to Joseph, for several years the Union and GPL had agreed that junior staff would be paid double for working a 6th day and senior staffers would be paid 15% of their salary for extra work.
However, Joseph said sometime in mid February, the power company had indicated to the Union by way of letter that they would stop making the payments to the workers.
This information was also passed on to the workers themselves.
The workers stopped receiving the payment as of February month to the dismay of the Union.
However, during the meeting, Joseph said the Union stated clearly that they will not be negotiating.
He pointed out that the representative from the Power Company then indicated that they would need some time to carry out some further ground work on the agreement which has been around since the early 90s.
The two parties are expected to meet Saturday for further discussions into the matter.
In the meantime, Joseph said they have been in contact with their workers and have asked them to hold steady on their strike action.
