The body of Hugh Bellamy, a 20-year-old autistic youth of 51 Wismar Housing Scheme was on Monday evening fished out of the Demerara River.
Bellamy’s mother, Hollice Joseph said that her son was in the habit of going to the river in the nights, and taking his bath, even though he could not swim.
According to the distraught woman, she became worried after Hugh left the home around 19.30 hrs on Sunday, and failed to return before midnight as he would normally do.
“After he didn’t return by 12.30, I went to look for him at his usual liming spots, but he wasn’t at any one of them; so I went and made a report at the station, but the police said I would have to wait 24 hours to file a missing person’s report”, Joseph declared.
Joseph said she returned home about 3.30 a.m.
The family resumed the search the following day, Monday, but failed to locate the young man.
It was late Monday afternoon that the Police called Hollice Joseph to inform her that the body of a young man had just been fished out of the Demerara River in the vicinity of DeYounge’s boat landing, and asked her to go and check whether it was her son.
Joseph said that upon checking she immediately knew it was Hugh from the clothing he was wearing.
He was the eldest of three children for Hollice Joseph and Jollyon Mackenzie.
Hollice Joseph said that only last December her son had to be pulled out of the river by a boat driver after he encountered difficulties while swimming.
