The gridlock in the relationship between local basketball referees and players tightened at a recent game when a Pepsi Sonics player, Aubrey Austin rushed referee Vijay Panday on the Burnham Basketball Court last week.
Kaieteur Sport was present during the early stages of the game between Pepsi Sonics and Ravens but subsequently left when the encounter seemed destined for postponement following the aggressive nature of the game.
However, this newspaper was later informed that Austin rushed Panday after being issued a technical foul during the second half of the game that was part of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) League.
Austin has since apologised for his behaviour on national television during a broadcast of the National Communication Network’s Six O’clock News yesterday. He said that he wanted to apologise on national television.
President of the GABA, Trevor Rose told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that if he had to make a unilateral decision, Austin would have been issued a life ban since his action “poses a serious threat to both referees and players.”
Unfortunately, Rose said that such decisions does not characterise his administration and therefore, the issue would be taken before the Disciplinary Committee of the association for a hearing among both parties on Tuesday.
“He [Austin] also turned on me. Players had to hold him back because he was asking for his bag to go for some joker,” Rose said, adding that such levels of ignorance in the sport will never be accommodated in Georgetown.
Austin’s actions has dealt the Pepsi Sonics a serious blow heading into the opening of the Next Level Entertainment Championships tomorrow since he was perceived as one of the senior point guards in the developing team.
