The Parrot wasn’t taken by surprise by the developments pertaining to the livinguyana blog. I must admit that curiosity was the major factor that drove me to log on and to browse the now closed site; curiosity to find out who was being maligned and what new “spin” was bestowed on the “regulars”; the regulars being the Head of State and his Cabinet and the State media.
Everyday, these officials received not just a tongue-lashing in terms of criticisms to alleged deficiencies, but were personally ridiculed in the profanity-riddled diatribes that made an R-rated movie look like G. The character assassination of those mentioned, which occurred almost by the minute, has to be unmatched for any civilized nation.
The Parrot is on record, through squawks, in saying that constructive criticism is necessary in every society. However, it is not an excuse to degenerate into malicious and hateful portrayals of public figures.
The families, sometimes babies, of officials were not spared the vicious and cruel “pen” of the bloggers. The decency of this space and newspaper would be defiled if I am to cite examples. What was more spiteful was the deliberateness of the blog’s manager not to post comments/replies by those who wanted to clarify and debunk the uncorroborated postings. What’s ironic is that the blog, in doing this, has the temerity to accuse the administration of being undemocratic.
In addition to this, the blog used the site to not only present unconfirmed information to revel in the ecstasy of sensationalism, but to purposely mislead people.
This, like in any society, can lead to panic which can subsequently trigger undesired actions. The latest in this regard was the misinformation they published pertaining to aspects of the local banking sector.
The known bloggers of the livinguyana site are people that can be considered literate and informed. As such, there is no reason to doubt that they are not au fait with the circumstances surrounding the global economic situation.
This knowledge should have instilled a sense of responsibility in the way related information is presented for public consumption.
The blog failed in this regard. The many times such failures occurred may be equivalent to a number of postings on the site. In other words, the livinguyana blog became synonymous with misinformation, ridicule and character assassination. Those who perused the site, even after one browsing, would not be unconvinced of the blog’s support and affiliation to the political opposition.
As a matter of fact, the site has never concealed its preference for those they wish to govern. From all its postings, the site was nothing but a proxy opposition party under the guise of a “media operative”.
This is in addition to being a source of derogatory fecal-like comments targeting public officials.
They have officially hidden their identities. This doesn’t mean that they are not known. The Parrot would like to suggest that if they want to be an official part of the political landscape, then seek Dr. Surujbally’s guidance to form a party. I did. Everybody say I love pepper. I can’t deny that. So not wanting to hide my real intentions, I am launching my Pepper Party @ www.parrotpepperparty.com. I hope you all come to the opening.
I am awaiting an invitation to the bloggers’ launch. Squawk! Squawk!
