$20M cocaine seizure…
Residents on the island of Wakenaam are on high alert to prevent any possible reprisals for the seizure of 50 kilograms of cocaine by the Joint Services.
Divisional Commander Christopher Griffith told this newspaper that the security forces are cognizant of the threat and have asked residents to assist in surveillance of the island.
He assured that the security forces have been getting the cooperation of the community and there is no need for alarm.
Last Saturday, the Joint Services during a raid on the island unearthed a huge quantity of cocaine worth more than $20M, which was stashed in a barrel in a farm camp following a tip-off.
The Joint Services are still hunting for a Wakenaam resident who they said is responsible for the drugs.
Sources on the island told this newspaper that there are fears that the owners of the seized drug could target those who they feel provided the tip to the security forces.
One source said that a similar situation prevailed on the island previously when drug dealers held the community under siege to recover a stash of drugs that went missing.
According to a senior police source, the islands in the Essequibo have become a major stashing point for Colombian cocaine bound for North America and Europe because of its remoteness and it is quite accessible to speed boats that can operate outside the view of the security forces.
Since the security forces have not been able to apprehend the main suspect so far, residents fear that the matter may take an undesirable turn.
But Divisional Commander Griffith assured that with the presence of the Joint Services on the island and in nearby locations, the security forces will be ready to respond to any situation.
