Five retired educators, with a combined total of 185 years of teaching experience, were honoured recently by the cricket teams of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) at the launching of the Farouk Kudrath Annual Memorial tribute to Retired teachers Programme.
Kudrath, who was the club’s Assistant Secretary / CEO died last year at the age of 40.
The former educator’s services were recognised by the Rose Hall Town Farfan and Mendes under-15, Pepsi under-19, Bakewell second division, Windies Sports Bar first division and the Metro Female teams at an inspiring ceremony at the club’s Area ‘H’ ground.
The programme was sponsored by Fogarty’s of the Laparkan Group of Companies.
Those honoured were Mr. Elton Lewis former headmaster of the New Amsterdam Multilateral School, Frank McKenzie former headmaster of J.C. Chandisingh Secondary, Yvonne Henry former headmistress of the Rose Hall Town Primary School, Dhiendranauth Somwaru former headmaster of Corentyne Comprehensive Secondary and Aslin Rahaman former senior master of the Rose Hall Primary School.
The recognition of the teachers, it was disclosed, formed part of the club’s personal development programme with its main aim to honour teachers who contribute to the development of team members and who are role models to youth in Region 6.
The RHTY&SC, Secretary / CEO Hilbert Foster stated, is successful because all of its members are well educated and all of the awardees played a major role in that achievement.
Referring to the five retired educators as the perfect role models, Foster thanked them for molding the minds of the club members and thousands of others during their careers.
He challenged them to share their vast experience with young sportsmen and women to assist them to be proper ambassadors for Berbice and Guyana.
Fogarty’s Regional Manager Mr. Kadar hailed the cricket teams for a brilliant idea, stating that honouring those who educate your mind is a noble task. The Regional Manager stated that Fogarty’s was pleased to be associated with the programme because over the years it has always placed great emphasis on education.
Sadiz Kudrath son of the late Farouk Kudrath, who is also a member of the Pepsi under-19 team, thanked the RHTY&SC for recognising his father’s memory by naming the Tribute Programme after him.
He also thanked the awardees for their contribution to the education sector stating that education makes it easier to play cricket because an educated mind can stand on its own. Elton Lewis and Frank McKenzie speaking on behalf of the awardees expressed gratitude to cricket teams saying that it was a pleasure to be selected as role models.
Lewis noted that it was also pleasant when someone’s contribution is acknowledged and also praised the RHTY&SC for the unbelievable work it is doing in Berbice. “Teaching is one of the most rewarding careers, as you are able to see the fruits of your efforts through the success of your students.”
He also informed the gathering that RHTY&SC Secretary/CEO was a former
student of his and was happy that youths in Berbice are benefitting from his (Foster) role in mentoring.
McKenzie, in a well received speech, highlighted that the most important assets for a teacher are personal discipline and a commitment to hard work. The former JCCSS headmaster stated that it was a pleasant surprise when former students can honour their teachers.
Calling the RHTY&SC the best in Guyana he challenged club members to uphold their high tradition of success and visionary plans.
Each of the awardees received a Farouk Kudrath Memorial Certificate of Excellence along with other gifts which included a large food hamper, compliments of Fogarty’s.
The late Kudrath served as Assistant Secretary/CEO of RHTY&SC for 10 years and had special responsibility for the annual anti drugs and pro-education campaign.
He was also responsible for the cricket team’s personal development programme under where each cricket teams is mandated to do five community related projects.
