– GNA President urges business community to assist
As the National 16 and Under Netball squad prepares to participate in the upcoming Caribbean Championships in Jamaica, President of the Guyana Netball Association (GNA) Dr. Maxine Parris-Aaron is urging members of the business community, who were sent letters asking for assistance, to respond as early as possible.
Parris-Aaron speaking with Kaieteur Sport Monday, informed that the squad which has been in training for the past two years, concluded its third encampment on Sunday, at the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport Training Centre in Sophia.
According to the President, the contingent was been offered a reduced fare from the Airlines, while hotel arrangements have already been made, but it is now a question of confirming those appointments.
“I’m asking those business entities that we’ve written soliciting their assistance to respond very early so that we can immediately confirm our schedules,” she stated.
She, however, did corroborate that a few have already done so.
Monday Parris-Aaron said that she held discussions with parents to brief them about the current state of affairs and to request their assistance in planned fund raising ventures.
In terms of the team’s preparations, the GNA Head disclosed that they’ve been engaged in practice games against senior players on weekends and so far their performance has been heartening.
An estimated $3million is required to ensure the team’s participation in the event which runs from April 22-30.
The President when confronted to give an estimate of what percentage of monies have been accrued so far promised to do so in a subsequent interview.
Meanwhile, the GNA has been asked by the Burnham Foundation to organise a tournament which is slated to be staged on March 14-15 on the tarmac, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Four teams have been invited to participate in the competition and they are Emanie, Renaissance, All Stars and the national 16 and under unit.
Those named on the squad are: Shonette Estwick (Captain), Tiffany Estwick, Tessa Trim, Simonica Fanfair, Joy-Ann Blair, Alisha Nedd, Christine Samuels, Semona Hopkinson, Tasnica Lovell and Shameza Subrattie.
The Coach is Lawrence Kellman; Manager and Assistant Coach- Shondell Samaroo, while Dr. Maxine Parris-Aaron, who is the 2nd Vice-President of the Caribbean Netball Association, will also travel to Jamaica.
