NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – Eighteen-year-old Paul Remington of Lot 40 Stanleytown was accused of raping a 13-year-old girl from the said community.
He was reportedly arrested on Friday and released on $20,000 station bail. He has since been admitted to the New Amsterdam Hospital.
His mother, Pearl Ann Remington, said, “He is innocent. I want justice for my son!”
According to the woman, the teen is suffering from cancer of the rectum, a diagnosis that was made ten years ago. The lad reportedly bleeds daily and must wear a disposable diaper.
He attended the Overwinning Primary School and later, classes at the Adult Education Association but due to his condition dropped out of school ten years ago.
Pearl Ann Remington was informed on Saturday of her son’s predicament. “About 6:00 hours I get the message that police gone with Paul. I say for what? They say for raping some girl. I get a real surprise!”
The mother claims that although he is a man, life has dealt him an unfortunate blow and as such he is incapable of such an act. “I know he got a penis yes. His blood count low, if you see it; it is does just deh hang down. He always taking blood. Right now he needs a donor to get four more units of blood.” She said that her son is incapable of an erection.
She claims that the 18-year-old is not fully developed for his age. “Life for him is not good. He does get pain all over he body…He can hardly walk; he can’t stand up for long. He could eat and bathe himself when he strong but all like how he sick now – he can’t do anything for himself. He in hospital since yesterday and they give he a pint of blood last night.” Ms Remington claimed that the mother of the 13-year-old girl was on a local television station in New Amsterdam. “She been on the news saying that the girl left on Wednesday to drop off a rechargeable lamp at she aunt and never return. She mother say that she certain that she ain’t run away with a boy and that she certain it ain’t got nothing to do with boy story. She say that the girl is demon possessed. The girl go back home on Friday night. Then how come now all of a sudden me son rape she?”
Paul Remington lives with his maternal grandmother, Murle Weekes, who is said to be in her late 70s, and his aunt Dawn Weekes, who is on vacation overseas.
The grandmother is also said to be in poor health. “She don’t move. I ain’t know what wrong with she. She don’t come out, she does just move around in the house.”
According to the boy’s mother, the girl is no stranger to her son. “He knows the girl – is same Stanleytown they all living.
He does be at the window all the time so he seeing everybody who passing. Of all the men in Stanleytown, why my son?”
She is also upset with the manner in which police ranks reportedly dealt with the boy, both while being taken into custody and during his detention. “When they arrest him, the girl stepfather go with the police to pick he up and the girl stepfather beat he up!
He cuff me son in he belly. After they carry he to the station (Central Police Station) they tell he – he admit that he rape the girl. But the boy saying he ain’t; he ain’t admit. A big belly police at the station tek a stick and start lashing he and tell he don’t deny it. The police them tell me ‘Lady you ain’t know what kind of son you got’.”
She added, “He tell me that when he was in the cell, he get sick and when them other boys in the cell tell the police, them ain’t pay heed. They tell he when they release he on Sunday ‘Leh he mek he heights!’
According to a senior police source in Division ‘B’, the matter is being investigated and the lad was placed on bail due to his medical condition. In connection with allegations of physical abuse while in police custody, the official said that would be investigated as well.
When contacted yesterday, the mother of the 13-year old girl said that she could not say much on the matter. “I went to the police today (Tuesday) and they tell me to return tomorrow .”
According to her, the child disappeared from home on Thursday last about 15:30 hours. At the time she was taking a rechargeable lamp to an aunt further in New Amsterdam.
“From Thursday she left she didn’t come back till Saturday morning about one something. I don’t know who bring she home because I was out looking for she all over the place. Me ain’t really know where she was. I asking she and she ain’t really telling me nothing.”
When asked if she was actually raped, the mother said, “No! The doctor tell me I have to get a police officer to go with me to the hospital so they can tell me what is it. I don’t know if they pick up anybody, they didn’t tell me anything.”
Responding to the question of her reputed husband assaulting the suspect, she said, “The person I am living with…I don’t think he hit the boy whoever they talking about. Because me and he was all over the place all the time looking for the girl.”
“The police tell me if I find she or if she come home let me carry she to the station. I take she and carry she to the station. They tell me let I go back later the same day – about ten something on Saturday. They ask me certain questions and so I give them the information.”
Is the girl really demon possessed though? “I don’t know what to say – before she go away she used to stay just so and tek in and start frothing through she nose and stuff. She used to hustle to try and strangle you and she used to try to kill she self and so. I would say it got to do with a spirit. Me ain’t know how the spirit get in she or so but I know is a spirit.”
