Another serving member of the Guyana Police Force has being charged for accepting a bribe. It was alleged that Sherwin Cummings, 23, of 22 Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, on December 27 last, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport obtained US$100 from Wazher Khan.
A further charge states that he accepted the bribe for inducement or reward to prevent prosecution of Khan.
Cummings pleaded not guilty before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
According to Police Prosecutor, Denise Griffith, on the day in question Khan had an expired Jamaican passport in his possession.
He was allegedly told by the officer that he would need to pay US$100 to avoid prosecution and directed the man to place the money in the toilet where he would later uplift it.
Griffith further told the court that Cummings is still on his probation period, since he had only become an officer in May of last year.
He was placed on $50,000 and is expected to make his next court appearance on March 13.
Over the past three weeks a number of policemen have been charged in connection with accepting and demanding money from members of the public so as to prevent prosecution.
