Miles Fitzpatrick, in charge of Stabroek News, in the absence of David de Caires, who was on holiday at the time, bluntly informed me that he doesn’t think a newspaper should have columnists. At that time, I was a weekly commentator with Stabroek News. You live to see incredible, unbelievable, unimaginable things in this life that all of the world’s six billion people are part of. I quietly go on my way, comforted in the knowledge that so many times I have the last laugh and will have the last laugh.
An extremely powerful person in this land publicly called me a sleaze ball. Yet so many controversies surround this person that I am certainly having the last laugh. This same Fitzpatrick turned out to be a columnist with Stabroek News.
I am not against newspapers having commentators; who would? What I reject with every ounce of my blood are anonymous columnists that write on general tropics. There is nothing wrong with a nameless opinion-maker that writes on a specific topic, like a business analyst. Such a person needs concealed identity because they operate within the system and fear victimization over the exposures they bring to the nation.
The situation is totally different with a commentator that operates in a generalized context. I have done several pieces on the untenability of a nameless analyst that has no specific subject-matter. My most emotional charge against such a process is that it is a highly indecent, immoral act that cannot be justified by even the greatest philosopher.
An anonymous columnist defaces civilized values. Imagine you can be a prominently admired citizen yet do nasty things behind a sobriquet in the newspaper. The examples are numerous but one egregious case should be mentioned.
In the Sunday Stabroek years ago, a highly prominent citizen, using a pen-name, wrote that the then UG Vice-Chancellor was an ugly person. You would be shocked to know who this citizen is.
The good news is that with the advent of television, newspapers no longer need pen-writers. There is a plethora of television analysts that make social analysis worthy of being digested. People are glad to identify with these people given the views they hold.
Guyana has gone out of control. Nowhere in the world can you find a newspaper columnist attacking the physical characteristics of public figures as what we see in Guyana. I am happy Stabroek News has dropped Wednesday Ramblings even though it was satire. What does the facial shape of a Minister have to do with his/her policies? The UK has a blind Cabinet Minister.
The PPP and Mr. Jagdeo will never learn. Here is why. An employee of this newspaper, two months ago, showed me that there was an anonymous blog named livinguyana.blogspot.com. What I saw there was shocking. I never went back to that site. I found out with adequate proof who was one of the persons posting on that site. I told him it was wrong to use such vile, sick language to attack real persons who cannot respond to him.
He was unapologetic. Now enter the real sickness. Another employee of this newspaper hauled me from my chair to show me what was on a blog. I told the person I was not interested in seeing livinguyana.blogspot.com. It was then indicated that it is another website with a similar name (liveinguyana.blogspot.com)
It turned out that this blog was (and is) being run by high public officials in the employ of the Government. Yes! Believe it! Top Government people! There is more to come. What is on this blog is something that even Adolf Hitler, even the world’s most tyrannical leaders would not tolerate. This is a blog that is extremely filthy, incites danger and harm to anti-government critics and the photographs and language are things the civilized world should never tolerate. So the police are going after livinguyana.blogspot.com but what about the other one from the government that has a similar name?
How stupid and how dangerous that a government can descend to that level!
Does Mrs. Jagan know that her government runs one of the filthiest blogs that can be found anywhere in the world? Brace yourself for the unimaginable. This blog posts pornography on the site, taking the face of pornographic actors and pasting it on to opposition figures. Any decent human being would revolt against this pathology. Yet not one PPP leader has called on the Government to desist from this moral sickness.
I will give the names of these people to the US Embassy and ask that they consider revoking their visas. I am calling on the police force to shut down this government site immediately
