The 2009 Toucan Industries Inc. Mash Junior Tournament came to an exciting conclusion yesterday at the Georgetown Club courts.
After five days of stiff competition winners were decided in the six skill level categories with Oliver Downes, Kayla Jeffrey, Lee Fung-A-Fat, Akeila Wiltshire, Rebecca Xavier and Travis Whitehead emerging the winners of the various categories. Four players also received special awards for their performances.
Toucan representative Mr. Lenny Shuffler was on hand to present the prizes to the participants and he complimented the children on their ability to combine the mental part of sports with the physical side. He also pledged his company’s commitment to further the development of squash in Guyana.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Squash Association has also shortlisted its training squads to start preparing for the Caribbean championships which is scheduled for Barbados in July of this year. The squad has one notable exclusion, Abhishek Singh, who is a former Caribbean under-13 champion. He is currently recovering from back surgery and will be out of commission for six months.
There are five new faces on the national squad, with the girls under-13 players Akeila Wiltshire, Rebecca Xavier and Gabrielle Fraser as well as Kristina Cheeks being all newcomers.
While on the boys side, Ryan DaSilva is the only new face. Three new players have also been added to the developmental squad in Lydia Alphonso, Alexandra Phang and Travis Whitehead. All the players named below are asked to attend a special meeting at the Georgetown Club today at 6:00pm.
