– Dr. Leslie Ramsammy
The number of dengue cases has reduced across the country, and the Ministry of Health has assured that it has the situation under control.
Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy said that fogging exercises are still ongoing in Georgetown and Lethem.
These exercises will soon commence on the East Coast and East Bank of Demerara.
According to the Minister, a total of 205 dengue cases has been recorded so far for this year.
In the first four weeks an average of 31 cases was recorded per week.
That number has been reduced to fewer than 21 cases per week.
Last week only nine cases were recorded which, according to Minister Ramsammy, is the lowest number for this year.
Of the 205 cases detected so far, 121 of them were from Region Four (97 from Georgetown), 29 from the East Coast of Demerara, 15 on the East Bank of Demerara and 40 cases in Lethem.
For the corresponding period last year only 70 cases were recorded but, according to Dr. Ramsammy, testing was not done on a wide scale.
“At this time, there is not an increase in the incidence… We have been successful in keeping it under control, but the Ministry will continue to monitor the situation on a daily basis, and any place that indicates that there is a threat, we will respond immediately,” Minister Ramsammy said.
He explained that the dengue cases seem to be occurring in the 15 to 44 age group, which represents 130 of the total dengue cases.
Of that number, 91 are women.
Only recently, the Ministry of Health issued an urgent advisory to residents in Regions Four and Nine where there was an increase in the number of dengue cases.
So far, it has been confirmed that one woman has died from hemorrhagic dengue fever, which is the worst form of the infection.
Earlier, Minister Ramsammy had stated that one of the challenges the Ministry is faced with is the constant movement of people from neighbouring countries where dengue fever is present.
The strain of dengue fever that is present in Guyana is usually the mild form, according to Dr. Ramsammy.
He added that, since hemorrhagic dengue is present in other countries, it will enter Guyana and, unless the Ministry does not deal with the vector issue, there will be a major problem.
