Demerara defeat E’bo by 5 wkts.

Defending champions Demerara defeated Essequibo by five wickets in the second round of the Castrol 50-overs under-15 Inter-County cricket competition at the Anna Regina Ground on the Essequibo Coast yesterday.

After the first game was abandoned due to rain on Saturday with both teams collecting a point, the players finally got a chance to showcase their skills after parts of the pitch was burnt with gasoline yesterday morning to aid in the drying process.

In a match which was reduced to 44 overs per side due to a 65-minute late start following overnight showers, Essequibo, watched by a fair size crowd, made 132-9 off their allotted 44 overs after winning the toss. All-rounder Ahmad Khan top scored with an unbeaten 25 while Vijay Surajpaul contributed 16. 

Skipper Shaquille Williams was Demerara’s most successful bowler with 2-25 from nine overs while fellow off-spinner Christopher Surat supported with 2-26 from eight overs. 

Demerara in reply scored 133 for 5 in 43.2 overs with Khemraj Chanderpaul getting 37 and Sunil Rupee 27 on a good batting track and slightly heavy outfield.

Ahmad Khan, Vijay Surajpaul, Mark Tyrell and Kowsillar Deo took one wicket each for Essequibo who will face Berbice on Tuesday at the same venue in their next game.

The Demerara team, which took two points for their win yesterday, is expected to arrive in the City today and will face Berbice in their next two games at the Guyana National Stadium on Friday and Saturday.
