Football buffs that are planning to visit the Georgetown Football Club Ground tonight can expect top class entertainment as the Mayor’s Cup Football championships continues at that venue.
Tonight’s double-header will pit the skills of Western Tigers up against Uitvlugt FC, while Camptown takes on Pouderoyen.
Camptown will depend heavily on striker Richie Richards and national defence player Devon Dummett. With support from fellow national defence player, Orlando Gilgeous and midfielder Troy Prescod along with Maurice Prince between the uprights, the team from Campbellville will feel that they have a more than reasonable chance of carting off the honours.
On the other hand, Pouderoyen will remember only two well the incident last year against Camptown. A ruckus had ensued forcing officials to abort the match. An inquiry later found the West Demerara team culpable and it received a one-year ban. Ironically, this is the first match since their return.
Fans can therefore expect this team to be spewing fire in its attempt to erase the sourness of that fiasco. Captained by Delon Josiah, the West Coast team will depend on their strikers, Clement Brown and Gideon Payne as well as defence players Toine Lopes and Michael Costello. Marvin Griffith will perform duties between the uprights.
The game between Western Tigers and Uitvlugt is expected to be another thriller. Sherman David and Colin Nelson (midfield) are expected to lend support to national striker, Devon Millington, while Stephon Hope (midfield) and Kevon Gordon (defence) will shore up the ‘Tigers’ effort.
Ron Liverpool, in the goal, will be required to be at his best to stave off the persistence of opposition players the likes of forwards, Ceon Babb and Owen McGarrell.
They will also have to contend with midfielder, Jermaine Murray and pierce the strong defence of Captain Lennox Torrington. Add midfielder, Charles Stoby and Sherwin Lanferman in the goal and a good match is envisaged.
Meanwhile, Buxton Football team made good of their pre-match boast and sent city team Uprising packing 2-1 when play in the Mayor’s Cup Football Championship continued at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground, Friday evening last.
Buxton drew first blood when Captain and midfielder, Rashley Morrison led from the front and slammed in the first goal 48 minutes into play. Uprising responded with an 80th minute scorcher off the boot of John Fecker, whose effort eventually forced the game beyond regulation time. Reuben Morrison then slammed in a 92nd minute scorcher that effectively sealed the deal for the East Coast team.
Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United ensured that the East Coast teams did not cart off all the spoils with a 4-1 drubbing of BV in the final game of the double header. Eddie Gomes opened Alpha’s account in the 24th minute with support from Dwayne Jacobs, who netted a double in the 47th and 60th minute. Elton Browne then polished off the onslaught with a 64th minute goal. BV’s, Delroy Deen then scored a face saving goal for the losers in the 85th minute.
Coach of the Buxton team Sheron Abrams expressed delight at her team’s performance. She said that they were able to exact sweet revenge following a loss by way of a penalty shootout when the two teams met in the Mayor’s Cup competition last year. She has issued a warning to the Pele FC, their next opponents, to come prepared for a stern test.
Kick off time for tonight’s action is 18:00hrs sharp.
