Publishing in Guyana is a precarious business; publishing a specialised magazine in Guyana is almost foolhardy. But the forces behind Guyana Entertainment Magazine (GEM) have successfully braved the challenges to produce thirty-one well-timed issues to date – in its fifth year of existence.
To execute this feat in the face of publishing in a developing country with numerous constraints including an unreliable market for such an item, in the face of naysayers, in a society where reading is waning and audio-visual technology reigns is worthy of note and support. The publisher noted that the success of the magazine is due to a number of factors including ‘aggressively showcasing the best of the country in entertainment, culture, fashion, beauty, sports and travel to thousands of hungry readers’, providing ‘positive entertainment and escape for readers’, and most of all, ‘people are willing to support quality media if given the opportunity’.
To date the publisher, Simeon Corbin and his dedicated team have produced thirty one issues covering mega events like Carifesta X, showcasing personalities like Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Capt. Gerry Gouveia,
Donna Ramsammy-James and Nicolette Fernandes and institutions like Kashif & Shanghai and Nadira and Indira Shaw Dance Troupe. The magazine has also showcased the best in fashion, music, art, and sport.
The Guyana Entertainment Magazine, Guyana’s Premier Lifestyle Magazine, popularly known as GEM was launched on January 30, 2004 at the Towel Hotel in Georgetown. Its fifth-year anniversary was celebrated with pomp and pride at Duke Lodge, Duke Street, Kingston, on February 20, 2009.
