Malteenoes fans watched in disbelief as their team crashed to an embarrassing 20 runs defeat against GCC in the final of the Busta 20/20 Second Division Competition played yesterday at the DCC round in Queenstown.
Set a modest victory target of 79, the lads from Thomas Lands were bowled out for 58 in 16 overs with only opener Troy Lewis (19) managing to reach double figures.
The chief destroyer was Australia-born Romain Grenville, who was later named Man-of-the-Match, produced a devastating one-over where he sent back the last three batsmen for just 2 runs.He was supported by Delon Fernandes, who grabbed 2-8 off 3 overs, while there was one apiece for Jeetendra Sookdeo, Raj Nannan and Wasim Haslim.
Earlier, GCC won the toss and elected to take first strike and were immediately in a trouble, losing their first five wickets with just 32 runs on the scoreboard.
The batsmen back in the pavilion were Grenville, Sookdeo, Haslim, Paul Bevaun and Reaz Hussein.
The next five batsmen added a further 46 runs with the best partnership of the innings coming from the pair of Nannan and Gavin Charles who together featured in a last wicket stand of 25.
Charles was the last batsman to be dismissed, run out off the final delivery of the innings for 8, while Nannan remained unbeaten on 10. Fernandes hit a top-score of 15.
For Malteenoes, Simeon Sam picked up 3-15 from 4 overs, while Imran Hassan 2-11 and Denis Legay 2-20 supported admirably.
The winning team collected $75,000 and a trophy, while the runner-up received $50,000 and a trophy.
General Manager of the Busta Company here, Robert Selman, presented the winners with their prizes.
