After a temporary lull in the brutal dog attacks seen last year, the first such reported attack for 2009 took place yesterday morning, when a dog, said to be a mixture of pit bull and some other breed, attacked Sherwyn Johnson, 31.
A close relative later said that for years Johnson had been tormenting and beating the animal.
At the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) Johnson’s guardian, Daphne Rogers, explained that Johnson was epileptic and that he was deaf.
“The dog is usually chained, but he broke the chain and attacked Sherwyn today” said Rogers.
Johnson was severely bitten on his lips and was taken to the GPHC where he received treatment for his wounds and was sent away.
Johnson has resided with his guardian in 61 Cross Street, Werk-en-Rust since his mother passed away. Despite the injuries Johnson sustained, Rogers said that the dog was necessary due to the crime rate in the area in which they reside, and as such there is no question of the household disposing of the animal.
