Elderly man bound, strangled in D’Urban Backlands home
The house in which Cadogan was slain
An elderly, Britain-based Guyanese man was found bound, gagged and strangled in his D’Urban Backlands home at around 17:00 hrs yesterday.
George Cadogan, said to be about 77, was
found lying on the floor in a bedroom of the Lot 180 Century Palm Road, D’Urban Backlands premises.
His limbs were bound with strips of cloth while a rag was stuffed into his mouth.
A kitchen knife was near the body but the corpse bore no visible marks of violence.
The spacious two-storey house was ransacked and there are reports that a laptop computer and two cell phones were missing.
The victim was the only occupant of the home.
Detectives believe that the killers gained entry to the home via a window which was recently broken and covered with plywood.
It is believed that Cadogan was slain some time between Thursday night and yesterday morning.
At press time, detectives were attempting to locate and question some carpenters who were doing renovations to the slain man’s house.
Neighbours claimed that none of the carpenters turned up for work yesterday.
Relatives said that Cadogan, who fathered five children, was a retired solicitor who resided in England.
However, a niece told Kaieteur News that her elderly uncle had suffered a stroke and returned to Guyana some time last December to escape from the cold England weather.
According to the niece, Cadogan had lunch with a nephew last Sunday and a relative spoke to him by telephone at around 18:00 hrs on Wednesday.
The first sign that something was amiss came yesterday morning, when one of her brothers went to Cadogan’s home to give him a papaw. After calling and getting no answer, Cadogan’s nephew placed the papaw on the fence and left.
At around 17:00 hrs yesterday, another male relative returned to the premises and again got no answer after calling repeatedly.
The relative then observed that the plywood that had covered the broken window at the front of the bottom flat had come loose.
The relative said that he entered the house via the broken window and immediately observed that a stereo set, which was normally on a bookshelf, was on the floor.
He began to check the bedrooms of the house and eventually found Cadogan’s bound body on the floor in a back bedroom.
A kitchen knife was near the corpse.
The nephew immediately informed other relatives who then notified the police.
While one neighbour claimed that she heard dogs barking on Wednesday night, none of them recalled seeing anything to arouse their suspicions.
Kaieteur News understands that Cadogan’s wife and other overseas relatives have been notified about his demise.
