…will not close embassy
By Tusika Martin
Canada has no intentions of closing its embassy in Guyana nor will the aid from that country be withdrawn.
Yesterday, a source close to the embassy said that the content featured in the Freddie Kissoon’s column stating that Canada may close its embassy and withdraw aid to Guyana is ‘irresponsible.’
The source added that personnel at the embassy were surprised that Kissoon did not make any attempt to contact the Canadian High Commission in Guyana.
Kissoon has since said that he got the information from a Canadian newspaper, ‘Toronto Sun.’ However, when the content of the article was examined by this newspaper, there was no such indication.
Another source close to the embassy told Kaieteur News yesterday that Guyana is still eligible for aid from Canada and he was not aware of any changes to that position.
Some months ago when Canada’s Prime Minister visited the Caribbean, he had announced that the region will receive US$600M over a ten-year period as aid.
Guyana is a part of this initiative.
The US$600M is double the amount of aid that the region has received over the years.
Until now, Guyana has always been a ‘development partner’ with Canada and now the entire region is under the same category.
According to the source, Guyana benefits more than many other countries under the Basic Needs Trust Fund.
Guyana, the source said, has more to benefit as part of the region rather than to stand alone as a development partner. At present, the Canadian High Commission has been running several advertisements in the local newspaper for positions at its office at High and Parade Streets, Georgetown.
