Freddie is perplexed as to why more and more persons and organizations are not raising their voices against what is taking place in Guyana. He should be the least to be wondering why this is happening.
Has he forgotten the struggles that he was involved in against the PNC regime? Has he forgotten how it was just a handful of leaders drawn mainly from the middle class that led the struggle against the Burnham dictatorship? Has he forgotten how quickly the masses disassociated itself from the Working People’s Alliance after Burnham unleashed his goons on the party?
Has he forgotten how just before Walter was assassinated that the WPA was in state of self-imposed dormancy and this is why Burnham was able to capitalize on this non-militancy to assassinate Walter?
Has he forgotten the lessons of history that it is always a small band of men, mainly drawn from the intellectual and middle classes which have been able to mobilise the masses to bring about social change?
He should not that surprised that more and more bodies in Guyana are not speaking about against the excesses of the PPP Government. Has he forgotten when he was the singular column in this country writing against what was taking place under the PNC?
He should not be surprised at what is taking place in Guyana and instead of pleading for more persons to speak out, he should recognise the needed to support, rather than be jealous of those who have had the courage to expose what is taking place in Guyana.
The Peeper would love to show his face but at this time the Kaieteur News does not feel that it has exhausted the usefulness of having faceless columnists.
The divisions in our society are as such that many persons judge the message by the identity of the messenger and especially in Guyana there is in our polarized society a tendency to judge someone’s opinion by reference to his or her ethnicity or political affiliation.
And this is why a decision has been taken to extend the Peeping Tom column so as cultivate the receipt of views without being prejudiced by a face. There are many who see the publication of a faceless column as retrogressive not accepting that there is some utility of allowing persons to receive a wide range of views without having to associate those views with a political face, political affiliation, ethnicity or even a personal history.
There are others of course who are speaking out and who need to be encouraged. One such person is Mr. Christopher Ram, someone who this column has not always seen eye to eye on some subjects.
One must however respect the bravery of Ram who given the vindictiveness of some persons holding political power, is prepared to speak out regardless of what the consequences could be to his accounting and auditing firm.
Chris Ram has of recent been providing a real valuable service to the Guyanese people through his columns and also through his letters which have exposes many a shortcoming and wrongdoing within the ruling administration.
For this he must be commended.
The Kaieteur News, under Glenn Lall, has also been taking a defiant and principled stand against wrong doing. I am sure that pressure is being brought to bear on Lall but those who are doing so are wasting their time. Glenn Lall is fearless. He believes in destiny and he believes that whatever happens to him was destined and therefore he is not going to be at all moved by any pressure.
The Kaieteur News knows that it suffer dire consequences because of the stand that it has taken against corruption in high places. Credible information from impeccable sources has indicated that there were plans to deal with Kaieteur News. We know that we will come under the hammer because we have received information to this effect.
There are other persons within this society and also within the PPP and within the government who are not in agreement with some of the excesses that are taking place. And so the plea should not be one of frustration as to why more and more groups are not coming out.
Rather the plea should be for greater support and defence to those who, like never done and ever ready Freddie, are staking a stand against wrong doing in this country.
The media needs to do much more. If Freddie is exposing so much, then you can well imagine how many other things are being swept under the carpet. The media needs to be more aggressive in exposing what is taking place. The media needs to stop engaging in trivialities and to expose the excesses that are taking place.
I am sure that once this is done, Steady Freddie will feel less frustrated.
