Thirty-three Peace Corps trainees have arrived in Guyana, and represent the 21st batch to come to Guyana since 1995.
The volunteers will be involved in an eight-week Pre-Service Training focused on providing trainees with opportunities and experience which would enable them to function effectively in the project areas of Community Health Education and Community Education Promotion.
They will also receive instruction on how to integrate easily into the Guyanese society, while being responsible for their personal health and safety. In addition, they will be taught Peace Corps policies and procedures to enhance their field work.
From 1966 until 1971, more than 160 Peace Corps volunteers served in Guyana.
In 1993, then President, the late Dr Cheddi Jagan, invited the Peace Corps to start sending volunteers to Guyana again.
The first batch came in 1995, and since then more than 450 American volunteers have served here.
They typically serve for a two-year period.
The Peace Corps was created by the late U.S. President John F. Kennedy in March 1961 to provide human resource and technical assistance to developing countries that request this kind of support.
