Dear Editor,
Guyana the country of the Piper! Yes! We see this everyday. Today we have a complement of engineers and others who fit the Guyana scenario.
Let these engineers detail to the nation and the President why this 80′, 8-10 miles of canal be built when we see and know that the existing facilities are sufficient, if properly kept and administered.
First of all, the Kobi Canal is not 40% operational, only 5%. Anybody could see — drive up the road to see that the water is just trickling into the Demerara River.
Secondly, if the weather station is almost sure that it will be wet, then the level of the conservancy should drop considerately.
Remember the dam is fragile — since we have the money put aside, use it to clean the out-falls; build infrastructure for the people in the three creeks to enhance production and make your people better farmers.
Do not use the money elsewhere. Let us see what would happen.
Thirdly, the distance of the conservancy is only about two miles or 1.5 miles from the Demerara River.
Fourthly, there would be no silting.
Fifthly, the cost of the 80′ canal with structures, bridges, culverts (massive), to maintain and do not forget what and who will be able to clear the silting — if at present we are unable to desilt and maintain and man all the small structures on the coast.. The canals at Numbers 1 and 2 drain into the Demerara River.
Why not maintain the existing structures and get it to work 100%. Clean the mouths and rivers of all the creeks — Abary-Mahaica-Mahaicony — periodically. Make sure people perform their duties and take precaution by lowering the conservancy according to the weather station. Better be safe than sorry.
I think the President has been misled with the whole drainage and irrigation system.
You need a comprehensive plan and most of all private engineers as advisors to overlook everything continuously.
