West/Dem, E/Coast to know their faith today
By Sean Devers
Pre-tournament favorites Georgetown advanced to tomorrow’s final of the Nalico/Nafico Inter-Association under-15 cricket final after their final preliminary round games were washed out yesterday.
While the no-result left Georgetown the only unbeaten team in the four-team competition to book a place in the final which will be played at Everest, East Coast and West Demerara (both with a win and a loss) will have to wait until today to know which of them will face the City side in the competition’s finale after a check on their respective net run rates are calculated.
In yesterday’s washed out encounters, Skipper Shaquille Williams led from the front with an attractive 45 to lead Georgetown to 170 all out in 49.5 overs before rain prematurely ended the contest with East Bank – beaten in both of their previous matches by East Coast and West Demerara – on 32-2 from 14 overs.
Williams, an off-spinning all-rounder, hit three fours and a huge six over mid-wicket off left-arm spinner Keshan Persaud and received solid support from Mohan Ramdeen who reached the boundary thrice in his 31.
Both Williams and Ramdeen played confidently on a slow track after Williams had won the toss in sunny conditions before Ramdeen was taken at slip off Mark Anthony after Krishnauth Haralall had removed Mark Rigby (7) as two wickets tumbled for no run to leave the score on 73-4.
Williams was eventually taken at mid-wicket off spinner Irshad Mustapha when five away from a maiden fifty at this level to leave the home team on 95-5. Sunil Rupee chipped in with 19 as Mustapha grabbed 4-28 and Anthony took 2-33.
Diquiane Murray then removed Natram Teekaram for a duck and Alfred Moonsammy (4) to reduce East Bank 7-2 in the fourth over. Anthony (8*) and Michael Forester (4*) revived the position before rain ended the match.
And at Lusignan, West Demerara were 47-1 in 10 overs replying to East Coast’s 90 all out in 36.4 overs in a match which would have decided the other finalist.
Reduced to a 45-over affair due to late preparation of the pitch, the match ended at lunch due to a heavy shower during the interval.
Brian Singh, who began the competition with an even half-century and followed it up with 27 in his last innings, again looked full of potential before falling for a top score of 22. But only Reyad Zaman of the other batsmen offered resistance in his 21 as off-spinner Arvin Seepersaud captured 4-6. Treon Bobb took 3-22 and 11-year-old left-arm spinner Akshaya Persaud took 2-14.
Travis Persaud then bowled Ricky Hinds for five off the inside edge at 23-1 when West Demerara began their reply on the slow track and uneven outfield.
However, Chandrika Persaud (27*) dominated the unfinished second wicket partnership with Bobb (9*) to put West Demerara in a strong position to win the game before the rain spoiled their hopes.
