The West Indies Women’s Team departed from Barbados on Sunday night for Australia where they will participate in the International Cricket Council’s Women’s World Cup. The 15-member squad has been together for the last nine months and Head Coach Sherwin Campbell said he is confident they will do well.
Most of the players toured Europe last summer and were also part of the team to Sri Lanka in October last year. The players also had a camp in Barbados four weeks ago and are ready for the challenge Down Under.
“During the camp we did a lot of fitness and we had three matches, which were great. In the camp we dealt with diet and preparation for a match and overall tactical awareness,” said Campbell, the former West Indies Vice Captain and opening batsman.
“We also had a lot of net sessions where we focused on batting, but we still have some more work on playing against spinners and building a long innings. We want the players to be able to build match-winning innings. Our bowling is really good and consistent. We have good new ball bowlers and we have some very good spinners.”
The team is led by wicket-keeper Merissa Aguilleira and also includes five players who played in the last World Cup in South Africa in 2005. Campbell said he will be looking for everyone to make a contribution.
“We might not have the experience of the other teams, but we have the talent to compete at this level – we saw that when we toured Europe and Sri Lanka. We are looking at the second phase (Super Sixes) and that would be very good for us.
In One-Day cricket, the key is what you do on the day and I know we can surprise any team in the world. We have the players to do the job and I have faith in the girls,” Campbell said.
“We want to start the World Cup on a winning note and set the tone for the tournament. The last time we played against South Africa in 2005 we beat them, so we will aim to maintain that. We are in a competitive zone, so we need to get off to a winning start.”
The Windies have been drawn in Pool A alongside Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
On Sunday, March 8 they face South Africa at Newcastle Number 1 Ground. On Tuesday, March 10 they meet New Zealand at Bankstown Oval and on Wednesday, March 11 play against Australia at Drummoyne Oval. Pool B includes England, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The top three teams from each group will advance to the Super Sixes.
There have been a further seven tournaments with Australia winning five of them (1978, 1982, 1988, 1997 and 2005), and England (in 1993) and New Zealand (2000) both triumphing once. The tournament has been staged twice each in England (1973 and 1993), India (1978 and 1997) and New Zealand (1982 and 2000) as well as Australia (1988) and South Africa (2005), when the Windies finished fifth.
Windies squad: Merissa Aguilleira (Captain), Kirbyina Alexander (Vice Captain), Shanel Daley, Deandra Dottin, Afy Fletcher, Geneille Greaves, Cordel Jack, Stacy-Ann King, Pamela Lavine, Debbie Lewis, Anisa Mohammed, Shakera Selman, Danielle Small, Charlene Taitt, Stafanie Taylor.
