The police have established a special unit to rid East Coast Demerara of bandits who have been creating mayhem over the past six months.
Kaieteur News understands that the unit, which comprises heavily armed patrol ranks and detectives, was set up last week and is based at the Vigilance Police Station.
Police analysis revealed that a two-man gang has been carrying out robberies between Cove and John and Enterprise.
Investigators believe that the duo was responsible for the Sunday morning attack on the home of former PNC Agriculture Minister, Dr. Simpson DaSilva.
The two are also suspected in the attack on a Nabaclis businesswoman last December.
It has been established that the men are armed with a shotgun and the deadly AK-47 assault rifle.
According to a senior police official on East Coast Demerara, the special unit is based at Vigilance with a view to responding quickly to any sighting of the men.
Meanwhile, the police are also on the hunt for a lone gunman who they believe is responsible for a number of robberies and rape in the Haslington area.
Within the past six months, the suspect carried out no less than five attacks, during three of which women were sexually assaulted.
Residents of the area have said that in the recent months there has been an increase in the number of sexual crimes along the East Coast.
The police think that one individual is behind all of the recent sexual crimes in the area.
In one case the suspect held two women at gunpoint and forced them to watch while he raped another.
Last weekend he struck again at Bachelor’s Adventure, robbing and raping a woman who was making her way home early Saturday morning.
Last week members of the Joint Services launched an unsuccessful raid for the suspect in Melanie Damishana.
Police Commissioner Henry Greene had told the media that the man could provide information on the remaining missing army AK-47 rifles. The suspect is also wanted in connection with the beating to death of 19-year-old Dennis Richards in August last year.
Richards, called Junior, died at the Georgetown Public Hospital after a brutal beating, allegedly at the hands of some men who had called him from his home.
