Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) recently launched a campaign geared at bringing an end to underage drinking. This campaign provides a unique opportunity for liquor retailers to assist in this fight, and several bars, nightclubs and restaurateurs have already signed the declaration showing their commitment to the campaign.
The campaign, called the “ID”, is a partnership between DDL and its liquor retailers. In addition, the campaign encourages retailers to partner by ensuring they comply with their liquor licence and not sell or serve alcohol to minors, nor employ anyone under the age of eighteen to sell or serve alcohol in accordance with the laws of Guyana.
All DDL customers are being encouraged to sign a declaration which signals their commitment to comply with their liquor licence. Each store that makes the commitment will post the ID Certificate and posters in their place of business.
The DDL sales team was specifically trained for this campaign so that retailers who sign the Declaration are informed about the importance of not selling alcohol to minors, and are motivated to join the fight against underage drinking.
During the signing of the first Declaration at Bistro 176, Cara Suites on Middle Street, Chairman of DDL Dr Yesu Persaud said, “Many attempts have been made to combat underage drinking with varying degrees of success. As a leading manufacturer of wines and spirits, we believe that it is our corporate social obligation to encourage responsible drinking of alcohol.”
Dr. Persaud added that he is extremely pleased that retailers have joined in the effort to protect children.
“We certainly hope that by the end of this campaign there will be zero tolerance for underage drinking in this society… Also, we have designed this campaign to take place during the Mashramani period when young people come out in their numbers to enjoy the celebration, and they would usually consume alcohol.” Dr. Persaud noted.
Proprietor of the Bistro 176, Mr. Shaun McGrath, commended DDL for taking the first move in Guyana to attempt to bring the existing law into compliance.
“I think it’s an excellent initiative because it’s been proven across the world that underage drinking has negative effects on children, affecting them both socially and medically,” McGrath said.
Liquor retailers throughout the country have shown their commitment to the campaign by signing the “ID” Declaration Letters and posting the Declaration Certificates and supporting posters in their places of business.
The “ID” campaign is further demonstration of DDL’s commitment to the development of Guyana both economically and socially, recognising that the protection of young people is important in this process.
