The Beacon Community Development Group of Buxton sponsored a Campfire and Cultural Show to mark the 86th birth anniversary of the late President Forbes Burnham, Founder Leader of the Peoples’ National Congress on Friday.
The late President Burnham was born on February 20, 1923. He died on August 6, 1985. This activity was held between Company Road and Middle Road on the Railway Embankment. The President of the Beacon Community Development Group, Mrs. Dawn King, in her welcoming address spoke about President Burnham’s leadership, and his contribution to the development of the Buxton community and the nation at large.
The other presenters were Pastor Carl Damon, Brother Noah and Priest Mwanza, who gave a review of the late President’s life and his contribution to national development. “What would have been the nature of the leadership and guidance in the situation and the challenges which confront this country today? What would have President Burnham done?”
He said that Burnham would have found a contextualised solution to the problems of national, local and regional development. He called for Buxton to remember Burnham by coming together and demonstrating Buxton’s historic leadership and resilience in confronting the challenges it faces.
Also at the evening’s proceedings were a number of invited guests, among them being former Home Affairs Minister Jeffrey Thomas and former Health Minister Dr. Richard Van West-Charles.
Dr Richard Van West-Charles congratulated the Beacon Community Development Group for organising the event to mark the 86th birthday anniversary of the late President Burnham.
He made reference to the historic contribution of Buxton and the challenges which the village faces.
He said that he had the opportunity to make a brief tour of the village, and highlighted the fact that his return to Guyana is imminent and the community of Buxton will be seeing more of him.
