Mash celebrations at Wakenaam were marred when the body of 19-year-old Peter Sankho was fished out of the Essequibo River yesterday about 90 minutes after he reportedly went under while bathing.
Sankho, a mason, formerly of Hararuni, Linden Highway, travelled to Wakenaam on Sunday to seek employment. He stayed with his mother-in-law at Friendship Village aback of a saw-mill.
According to reports, despite being warned by his mother-in-law not to swim at a koker, Peter took his four-year-old relative, Shalnin, on his back and swam to the mouth of the koker where he went down.
Screams from the four-year-old attracted the attention of the Sankho’s father-in-law, who was in a house about 50 yards away, and who sent his eight-year-old son Ramnarace to enquire what was happening with the child.
The young lad saw his sister struggling in the water some distance from the koker and swam out and rescued her.
Because the area is remote and there were no immediate neighbours to conduct searches, the family reported the matter to the police. A party of policemen visited the scene and began investigations.
Three members of the neighbourhood police dived into the river and began searching. Within ten minutes they found Peter Sankho’s body, which they pulled out of the river. The dead man’s wife, 18-year-old Simone, collapsed at the sight.
A post mortem is expected to be conducted shortly on the body as the police conduct their investigations.
