– stolen money recovered, third suspect sought
Two men were remanded to prison yesterday in connection with last Tuesday night’s $1.8M robbery at the home of Bartica gold trader, Suraj Hansraj.
Orin David, 24, of First Alley, Wismar, and Marlon Hicks, 30, of Hadfield Street, Lodge, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday, charged with robbery under arms.
They were remanded until March 17 next and ordered to return to court at Bartica.
It is alleged that David, Hicks and a third man attacked Hansraj at his West Indian Housing Scheme, Bartica home on February 17 last and relieved him of $1.8M.
The attack occurred on the very day that residents were holding an inter-faith service to commemorate the death of 13 persons, including three policemen, who were slain by gunmen.
Police said that one of the suspects was arrested while attempting to charter a speedboat at Bartica to take him to Parika.
However, boat operators who were aware of the recent robbery tipped off the police.
The other suspect was detained shortly after.
Police officials said that a quantity of money was recovered during their investigations.
Police are said to be looking for a Bartica resident who they believe is part of the gang.
