… sender uses fake ID, disappears
The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit is hunting a man who presented himself to the Guyana Post Office as Anand Singh to ship three kilogrammes of crack cocaine hidden in chunks.
The man went to the GPO on Tuesday with the drug hidden in the condiment and placed in a box. The inspection at GPO by the CANU ranks led to the discovery.
When making shipments the individual posting anything must present some form of identification. The man who identified himself as Anand Singh presented an identification card that turned out to be a fake.
He has since disappeared as if he has fallen off the face of the earth. The package was being shipped to a destination in Canada with a clearly stated address.
A source said that, having made the discovery since Tuesday, CANU decided to wait for a day to allow for the Canadian authorities to be notified so that they could stake out the recipient.
Meanwhile, the local law enforcement agents removed the drug and set about shipping the box via the designated carrier, Caribbean Airlines, to the Canadian destination.
There has been no word out of Canada, and the local sources say that the Canadians are not as forthcoming as they should be with the Guyanese.
Meanwhile, CANU is also looking for a former policeman identified as Randy Errinton Claimonte Charles, whose date of birth was given as June 18, 1984.
Charles is said to be the person who supplied some 7.4 kilogrammes of cocaine to a 16-year-old US-based Guyanese who was travelling to the United States on February 18 last.
The cocaine was in a bag that contained a teddy bear and cloth. The teen appeared in court on Thursday and was refused bail. Prosecutor for the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit, Oswald Massiah, told the court that the teen had been sent back to Guyana because they had experienced difficulty in controlling him. At the time of his arrest the relatives here were unaware that the teen was returning to the United States.
