The Greenheart Medical University (GMU) is still offering 25 Guyanese the opportunity to study medicine at half the price of the institution’s regular tuition.
This offer was made by the Chief Executive Officer of the University, Kevin Holder, who through the university’s Public Affairs Department, suggested that he wants to direct most of his energies to training local doctors as one way of improving Guyana’s health care system.
A press release from the university stated that Mr. Holder wants to see more Guyanese access the medical profession and as such has offered two Chairman’s Scholarships: one exclusively for an Amerindian student and the other to an underprivileged student, but both must be qualified to enter the GMU Medicine Programme.
It was noted that this was discussed with the Minister of Amerindian Affairs who has already identified an Amerindian student who will benefit from a full scholarship.
The medical programme includes a five-semester Pre-Medicine Programme, the Doctor of Medicine which includes two years of Basic Science and two years of Clinical Rotation at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
The standard tuition per semester for international students is US$4,900 and US$3,000 for Guyanese students.
The minimum requirements for the Pre-Medicine Programme are five CXC subjects, one of which must be a science subject, while the minimum requirements for the Medical Programme includes five CXC subjects and two GCE A levels, one of which must be a science subject, or a Degree in Biology or Chemistry from the University of Guyana.
According to the press release, GMU graduates will be allowed to practice their profession in Guyana and in the Caribbean.
For those students who may desire to practice in the USA, they will have to successfully pass the USMLE Examinations.
At present Greenheart Medical University has a Student Body of 40 students. This includes students from India, Nigeria and Guyana.
