Alcohol cited as contributing factor
An unidentified young man was fished out of a canal at Bee Hive, on the East Coast of Demerara, last evening.
The man, suspected to be in his early twenties, was reportedly imbibing with some friends, who were all swimming in the canal.
His friends reportedly left, but the man stayed on and continued bathing.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the man was observed walking in the canal, then suddenly dropped.
After he did not surface, some nearby youths started to scour the canal but were unable to reach him in time.
A young woman in the area even tried to revive him by mouth-to-mouth resuscitation as well as Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), to no avail.
