Dear Editor,
Again, I find the lack of sophisticated thinking on the part of the political opposition in Guyana amazing and somewhat depressing. Here we have a person who claims to have been a witness to one of the most gruesome atrocities in the history of Guyana. And how does the leadership of the AFC and PNC react?
They react with utterances of clichéd protestations and demands that have not been effective in moving this administration a fraction of an inch in the direction of their demands. Guyanese are being ill-served by an opposition that seems to be locked in a time warp of anachronistic ideas, reactions and thinking. And that, for a national population, is about the only thing worse than having a Government that is dictatorial, discriminatory, and corrupt.
How long ago was it that a whistle blower with information of a similar set of atrocities was assassinated in his bed? What deficiency in attention span prohibits the leadership of the political opposition in Guyana from being able to use precedent as a guide to their approach to serving the interest of the nation?
One would have thought that, given what happened to George Bacchus, the opposition would be frantically exhausting every effort to get this man before a UN Representative, where a statement could be taken from him by an impartial investigator, and arrangements made for his protection and security by that body.
The circumstances surrounding the killings at Lindo Creek make it a crime of international proportions. The fact that a large segment of the population is persuaded that the perpetrators are maverick members of the disciplined services demands that local representatives of that body be recused from any investigation of the matter.
It is bad enough that we have a Government of convenient ethics and morality. It is bad enough that we have a Government that gives the Nelson eye to circumstances of bribery and corruption among enforcing authorities. But it is infinitely worse to have an opposition that recycles the same old, tired and ineffective incantations to issues of catastrophic national proportions.
